What is a MEWP?

what is a mewp

A Mobile Elevating Work Platform or MEWP (as its most commonly known) is a term used to describe an aerial lift or platform.  These types of lift are often used to provide temporary access to hard-to-reach areas which would be difficult (or impossible) with traditional means.

Key indicators of a MEWP:

  1. A work platform or basket
  2. An extendable and/or articulating boom or elevating hydraulic mechanism.
  3. A base/chassis with tracks or wheels that allow the MEWP to be moved easily.

Used in a wide variety of industries including, construction, industrial services, manufacturing, maintenance, film, events and the emergency services, MEWPs provide a safe and stable platform for those working at height.

As you can imagine, MEWPs come in all shapes and sizes to suit different applications; from compact push-around lifts which can fit through doorways to high-reaching outdoor models which can reach heights of over 130 feet.

MEWPs can be used to assist workers in a wide variety of tasks such as installing electrics, welding, painting, plumbing or carrying out repairs to name a few applications.

Additional safety attachments can be equipped to most aerial lifts to improve safety and productivity on site.  These safety features can include emergency-lowering systems, fall protection equipment and guardrails.  You can find a full list of our safety innovations here.
